Confidential Mentoring Support

For General Practitioners

How can Mentoring help GPs?

Are you facing any of these? :

    • Never enough time?
    • Feeling stressed?
    • Struggling to cope with the demands of General Practice?
    • Personal or Professional issues?
    • Problems in the practice?
    • Concerned about your future?
    • Difficult career decisions?
    • Worried about burn-out?
    • Nowhere to turn for help?

As GPs, we are responding to difficult and demanding interactions and situations every day. Time pressures mean that we are often multi-tasking and have little time to relax or reflect. Work overload can result in prolonged days, with limited opportunities to connect with colleagues or look after our own needs. Our family and friends don’t always understand how these pressures can affect us.

Many of us experience anxiety or stress, face difficult issues alone, or need help with overload or time management and don’t know where to turn for confidential support.

Are you struggling with stress, work problems or well-being issues?

Maybe you are ignoring your own needs or feeling there is nowhere confidential to turn for support?

Do you stop to address your problems and seek help, or do you struggle on until things become overwhelming?

If you have been experiencing problems like these, maybe it’s time to make some changes. Support from an experienced GP Mentor offers you a confidential space where you can reflect and begin to address your difficulties and regain control.

If this sounds familiar, mentoring can help you make some positive improvements.

Who Am I?

Julia Thornley - Mentoring Matters
MA, MB, BChir (Cantab),

DCH, DObst RCOG, MRCGP

Dr Julia Thornely

My years in General Practice, as a GP Principal, Salaried GP and Locum, have given me a first-hand understanding of the problems many GPs face and the stresses they experience. My work in mentoring GPs in professional difficulty and my extensive experience as an Appraiser in different regions have shown me the huge need for personal support for doctors. I have been involved in mentoring and life coaching for twenty years and have appropriate qualifications and experience.

Besides mentoring and coaching in the UK, I am a volunteer primary care doctor, trainer, mentor and appraiser to a British Charity bringing health care to remote communities living in the hills of Nepal.

I am a mentor with YORLMC and Leeds Local Medical Committees, the professional voice for NHS GPs across North Yorkshire, Bradford and Leeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you based?

I am based in Otley, close to the cities of Leeds and Bradford in West Yorkshire and Harrogate and Ilkley in North Yorkshire.

Most people choose to meet me here in Otley for mentoring in comfortable and confidential surroundings, or I can travel to meet you. Telephone or video link sessions are also very effective and can minimise disruption to your daily routine and reduce the expense of travel.

As well as across Yorkshire and the North, I have mentored GPs in London, Birmingham, Manchester, the Midlands, the East of England and Scotland. I also have mentoring clients in Australia and Nepal.

How confidential are our appointments?

Confidentiality is of the utmost importance to me and our sessions and their content are completely confidential. The only people who will know about your consultation are people who you choose to tell. It may help with your progress if your nearest and dearest are aware of your mentoring as this allows them to offer you support, but that decision will always be yours.

As a registered General Practitioner myself, I am bound by the GMC Guidelines. If issues of a significant nature arise that need to be referred elsewhere, we will together decide what action is appropriate.

How many sessions are required?

Everyone’s situation and requirements are unique. Together we can work out what is best for you during our first meeting, and we will review the situation regularly depending on your needs and your progress. Many people find they want around six or eight sessions, though some choose a longer term coaching arrangement.

What are your charges?
I offer a complimentary introductory half-hour, whether by telephone or face to face. My fees are flexible and are based on an hourly rate, with a small mileage charge if I travel to meet you. If the cost will prevent you from accessing mentoring, please get in touch and I’ll be happy to discuss it.

Please phone or email me for more details.

How long do sessions last?
Mentoring sessions normally last an hour, though you can choose longer sessions, particularly if you are travelling a long way. They may be conducted face to face or by telephone and it is your choice as to which you would prefer. You are welcome to choose a mixture and if you live at a distance you may prefer an initial meeting followed by telephone sessions.
Where and when will my appointments be?

Sessions can usually be arranged at a time and place to suit you, or online. A series of sessions can be set up initially if that is appropriate, or dates can be arranged as we go along. Many people find it convenient to meet confidentially here in Otley. We can arrange your sessions to suit your own personal requirements, so please phone or email me and we will discuss what is most appropriate for you.

What is your commitment to my mentoring?

I will use my skills and experience in good faith and to the best of my ability to help you reach your desired goals. This requires our mutual commitment to the process, working together to enhance your outcomes and to achieve the best possible results. I routinely spend time in preparation for each of your individual sessions. I shall be happy to receive your feedback and suggestions on the process at any time, to increase our effectiveness.

What is your success rate?

Success is subjective, but I believe that every one of my clients has benefitted from their time spent with me. They value highly the opportunity to spend regular protected time reflecting on their own life and work and making the changes they desire with the support of a GP mentor.

Are you indemnified?
As an experienced General Practitioner and GP Mentor, I am fully indemnified by the MDDUS and registered with the GMC.
